Weight Reduction
Weight can be reduced by using alternative material and reduced packaging, or through integration to remove components. The combined weight reduction of the following two examples offer 0.6 percent fuel efficiency.
Passenger Airbag
To reduce the weight of a passenger airbag, changes include a smaller package, no bag retainer and a small inflator without filters. There would also be fewer components, making the product more cost-effective.
Net weight savings: 1.95 kg
Integral Park Brake
To reduce the weight of an integral park brake, changes include smaller packaging, elimination of torque and backplates, use of lightweight materials and modular construction. This would also result in a simplified corner assembly, making it more cost effective.
Net weight savings: 7.38 kg
